Vancouver WA Remodeling Guide | June 2026
A kitchen island needs room around it as well as useful space on top. Start with movement, storage, and seating before choosing its size.
At a glance: Decide whether the island’s main job is preparation, seating, storage, or housing an appliance. Mock up its footprint and test the routes between doors, cabinets, and appliances.
Test the island in use
Mark the proposed footprint on the floor, then imagine someone unloading the dishwasher while another person cooks. Include pulled-out stools and open appliance doors. Discuss usable clearances with the design team; a large island can reduce comfort if it turns everyday movement into a squeeze.
Make the inside earn its space
Place drawers and storage on the side where their contents will be used. If the island includes a sink or appliance, coordinate plumbing, power, ventilation where applicable, and access before approving cabinetry. An uninterrupted preparation surface may be more valuable than fitting every possible feature into one island.
Island features to evaluate
- waterfall or eased-edge quartz island tops
- outlet placement that supports mixers, laptops, and serving stations
- deep drawer stacks instead of wide lower doors

Questions about kitchen islands
Does every kitchen need an island?
No. A peninsula, movable table, or open floor area may serve a smaller kitchen better. Compare the circulation and storage each arrangement provides.
How should seating be planned?
Consider who will sit there, how stools pull out, and whether people pass behind them. Review the complete seating arrangement alongside cabinet and appliance access.
