Preconstruction Checklist for a High-Quality Remodel
A useful preconstruction checklist records decisions and responsibilities, not just a wish list. Its purpose is to expose missing information before people and materials arrive.
At a glance: Review scope, selections, access, protection, utilities, and communication with the project team. Mark each item as confirmed or still open, and give unresolved items an owner.
Separate confirmed choices from assumptions
Collect the current scope, drawings, selected products, allowances, and owner-supplied items in one place. Check that dimensions and finish names agree across documents. If a decision is not final, identify what work depends on it instead of allowing a placeholder to be mistaken for approval.
Walk the site together
Review deliveries, material storage, parking, protected routes, and rooms the household needs to keep using. Identify shutoff or access arrangements with the appropriate people. Agree on how progress questions and changes will be recorded. The checklist should reflect this project; remove irrelevant items so real omissions are easier to see.
Items to confirm with the project team
- confirmed finish selections before ordering starts
- site protection plans for occupied homes
- clear allowances for fixtures, tile, hardware, and lighting
For additional background, review Washington L&I contractor verification. Check the requirements and instructions that apply to your own project.

Questions about preconstruction preparation
Who should keep the checklist current?
Agree on a responsible contact and a shared location for the current version. Each open item should identify who must respond and what decision is needed.
Does every checklist item need to be closed before work starts?
That depends on the sequence. The team should identify which open decisions prevent the next stage and which can safely follow later.
